Halloween Crispy Crawly Treats
I came up with these cute little edible spider party pops for a post over on The Indie Tot about Halloween party ideas for kids, but I figured, why should kids have all the fun?
These are easy to make, they satisfy your sweet tooth, and they're a festive choice for Halloween!
What you'll need ~
- 6" lollipop sticks
- Wax paper
- Toothpick
- Black licorice laces
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Food coloring
- 1-1/2 tablespoons butter
- 5 oz. regular marshmallows
- 3 cups Cocoa Krispies cereal
How to make them ~
This recipe makes about a dozen treats. Prepare a work area with wax paper and cut the black licorice laces into the "spider legs." I only did six legs per spider (anatomically incorrect, but oh well). Have your lollipop sticks ready, too.
Next, melt the butter over low heat in a medium saucepan. Add the marshmallows and stir while they melt. Add a few drops each of red, blue and yellow food coloring until the mixture turns black. Once the marshmallows have melted, stir in the cereal. Remove from heat and allow to cool just enough to handle (a few minutes at most).
Spray your hands lightly with non-stick cooking spray to make working with the mixture easier. Grab some of the cereal mixture and form it into a ball. Then, make a slightly smaller ball - these are the two body sections for each spider.
Gently skewer the two balls onto a lollipop stick. Next, take a toothpick and gently poke three holes on both the left and right sides of the spiders (I put two on the larger segment and one on the smaller).
Now, place the licorice lace legs into each hole, and voilá ~ you have Crispy Crawly Treats! You'll want to work as quickly as you can when assembling the spiders. The longer the cereal has to cool, the more difficult it becomes to work with. You might even want a helper for this project to speed along the assembly.
Though it's not necessary, I used homemade marshmallows for this recipe ~ the fresher, the better. If you want to send these home as party favors instead of consuming them the day of the party, gently place the pops in cellophane treat bags and tie them off with black and orange ribbon.
