A Short History of Realme

The history of Realme can be traced to Oppo who began selling phones under its own brand name in 2014; however, because the company wasn’t achieving enough success it joined forces with a different Chinese manufacturer of smartphones (Coolpad) in the year 2015. The partnership didn’t last for long however, since Coolpad has sold its trademark and brand to Oppo in 2016. It continued to sell handsets under its personal brand name until 2018.It was decided to launch a new brand for smartphones called Realme. The launch only lasted three months though, because Oppo took full control over Realme in April of 2018 and continued to sell Realme-branded phones as part of its Oppo umbrella. Since May 2018 to today, Realme has been operating as an independent company of Oppo.

Since then, the company has been releasing phones at a rapid pace and also expanded its offerings from making phones available in India in addition to China to other regions of the world too.

The Realme Company has a net value of $1 billion, as per official sites, with the most up-to-date information is available as of press time.

Realme’s Chief Executive Officer is Shang Hsiao, who took over from the previous Realme Chief Executive Officer Sky Li on September 7th in 2018. The same day the announcement was made it was announced that Realme founder Tony Chen would become President of Realme and will also join the Oppo board of directors. Tony’s elevation to the board signifies that his stake of Realme has increased from 33 percent to 37 percent. In addition to managing Realme, Tony manages Oppo Digital which is Oppo’s research and development department for audio-related products.
